New in version 1.1:

  • Completely new front- and back facia, cleaner interface.
  • Less buttons: click anywhere to activate.
  • Auto-Backflip feature: the widget automatically flips back to the front after a given time.
  • User-selectable time for Auto-Backflip: 3, 4, 5, 10, 20 or 30 seconds.
  • Re-written and optimized code: faster, leaner and less bugs ;-)
  • Reliable and consistent prefs, and better random number-generation algorithm.

System Requirements

Dashboard Widgets can be used on any Mac running OS 10.4 (Tiger) or higher.
Guy D2's Widgets do not consume many CPU cycles, and only take up a minimum amount of disk space.

Installation

Installation of the Oblique Widget couldn't be easier:
When you download the Widget with Safari 2 (comes standard with Tiger), the .zip file will be automatically decompressed and installed in your (Home) ~Library/Widgets folder (after confirmation in Safari), ready for immediate use.

Other browser users should decompress the .zip file after download (you will end up with Oblique.wdgt), which then needs to be placed in your home Library folder:

/Users/YOU/Library/Widgets/

If you want to make the Widgets available to all users on your system, place them in the root Library folder:

/Library/Widgets/

Dashboard open

Now, activate Dashboard (F12, or via the Dock), open the Dashboard Dock by clicking on the encircled "+" icon (see illustration above), and drag the Widget Icon onto your Dashboard layer, where it will expand to its full size. Or simply click on the Widget Icon in the Dashboard Dock to have it pop up somewhere in the dashboard Layer.

Dashboard Dock

You're done... Enjoy using your Oblique Widget !

Remove the Widget from the Dashboard Layer by clicking its close icon.
Delete the Widget permanently simply by dragging the Oblique.wdgt file from within a Finder window to the Trash-can. Or use the Widget Manager (from OS 10.4.2 onwards) to remove or delete the Widget.
In the most unlikely case that you want to get rid of the Widget completely, you might also want to remove its preference file, which can be found here:

~/Library/Preferences/widget-com.guyd2.widget.oblique.plist

Version History

21 July 2005

Public release of Version 1.1
A mini-version of Oblique will have to wait for the next release...

19 July 2005

Finally found a solution for the infamous not-so-random bug which plagued Version 1.0 !
V1.1 nearing completion.

16 July 2005

Added the Auto-Flipback feature.

07 July 2005

Development of Version 1.1 has started.
A complete redesign of the front and back faces, and some serious re-coding and clean-up of the javascript functions.
Development is slow, due to many other activities taking up all my time (amongst them the development of another Widget, SeeSS).

- My Oblique Widget is mentioned on Tom Boon's EnoWeb ! (Thanks Phil !)
- And another one at FilmmakerMagazine.com/blog, in context of a review of Eno's new Another Day on Earth album...
- And yet another mentioning in a Japanese diary, no less ! (Hatena Diary).
Anybody here who reads Japanese ? Google translator makes a mess of it.

Note to self: Change surname so people can spell it correctly...

Ideas for future versions are developing...
- Auto flip-back to front within given time.
- User-defineable colour schemes.
- Getting rid of that nasty ghostline (right side) when flippin' over.
- Minimized version with auto-update of aphorisms.
- Animated fading of the "Draw a Card" button.

02 June 2005 - 7PM GMT+6

The semi-public release is very well received. No bug reports as of yet.
Going to submit the Widget to the offical Apple Dashboard Downloads section soon...
